Farming

This skill is a members only skill although free players may train this skill to level 5.

Introduction

Farming is one of the six resource gathering skills. However, training this skill involves a slightly different approach, as you have to plant seeds and return later to harvest them. Once you have planted the seeds, all you have to do is to simply return to your patches at a later time. This means you can focus on training other skills or activities while waiting for your crops to grow.

Farming lets you to grow various resources which can be used later in other skills like Herblore or Cooking. You can also use it as a source of raw food. All around Gielinor, you will find these special patches, covered with weeds at first. Once weeded, you are able to tend the land and create a wide variety of produce. Each patch is designed for a specific type of crop and as your level increases, you will earn the right to plant more complex and beneficial produce.

Basics

There are three main stages that you will encounter when training Farming: acquiring the seeds, planting the seeds and finally harvesting your produce. You can obtain seeds from various methods, including purchasing from the Grand Exchange or other players or as drops from monsters as you kill them. You can also pickpocket them from certain NPCs.

Once you have seeds, you will need to find the appropriate Farming patch. Each Farming patch is designed in such a way to allow only a certain kind of seed to be planted in it. Herb patches, for example, only allow you to plant Herb seeds within them. Farming patches can be found all over the world. Using a selection of Farming tools, you will have to tend to the patch to prepare it for planting, treat the patch with compost if you so choose and then actually plant the seed. Some patches will also allow you to water your crops.

After the seeds have been planted, you will have to wait a while for them to grow. Crops still grow while you are logged out of the game, so you can focus on other skills or enjoy a bit of a break from all the XP gains while you wait. When your crops are fully grown, you are then able to harvest your produce from the patch and use however you see fit.

Sometimes, your crops can become diseased or maybe even die. There are many different ways to prevent disease and death, but these could cost you! If diseased, you are able to cure the crops by a variety of methods further discussed below. Any dead crops you have will need clearing before new crops can be planted in the patch.

Farming Tools

The basic tools required to start Farming are listed below. They are obtainable through farming shops (4 shops in total across Runescape which are marked with a plant pot icon), bought from farmers (can be found at the majority of Farming patches around the world), trading with another player or bought through the Grand Exchange.

Tool Leprechauns

As you visit the many Farming patches around Runescape, you will be sure to encounter tool leprechauns wandering at the majority of them. They have the ability to store various Farming tools for you for free (interface shown below), while in addition being able to teleport you to the Vinesweeper Distraction & Diversion. Any tools you store with the leprechaun will be available from all the others, and can help you save a few inventory spaces as you do your Farming runs.

In addition, they can also convert any produce you harvest from your patches into noted form, a very convenient feature, as this enables you to obviously carry a lot more produce before visiting a bank to drop it off. All you need to do is simply use your produce on the leprechaun!

Compost Types

Unless your crops grow up healthy, you'll be missing out on the bulk of your experience while Farming, and compost can certainly assist in preventing that happening. Compost and supercompost both reduce the chances of your crops becoming diseased as well as increasing the harvest received from your produce, so getting into the routine of bringing some along on your Farming runs will certainly help your experience gains.

Compost and Supercompost

Regular compost is a less potent alternative to supercompost, and due to this fact, most if not all players will stick to supercompost while doing their Farming runs. Regular compost can be obtained through the Grand Exchange, bought from Farming shops, as well as being made by using either 15 weeds, vegetables or any other kind of grown item on a Compost Bin, which are found at the majority of Farming patches. In addition, you can store up to 255 compost with a tool leprechaun.

More potent and effective than regular compost, supercompost has a higher rate of reducing disease in your crops as well as increasing your maximum harvest, and should be applied to all of your Farming patches to assist in keep your crops healthy. Supercompost can me made the same way as regular compost, by using 15 organic items on a Compost Bin, and letting the contents rot for a while. If you're looking to make your own, the items below are ones to utilise:

Pineapples

White berries

Watermelons

Jangerberries

Fertile Soil (Lunar Magics)

Once you have completed the Lunar Diplomacy quest and have 83 Magic, you will have the ability to cast the Fertile Soil spell from the Lunar Spellbook. This spell allows you to treat the targeted Farming patch with supercompost via magical means, which requires 15 earth runes, 2 nature runes and 3 astral runes to cast, and provides 18 experience each time the spell is performed.

Farming Seeds

Seeds are the primary ingredient in Farming, as you are unable to plant and harvest crops without them! You can obtain seeds in a wide variety of methods. They can be stolen, dropped from monsters, bought from players or the Grand Exchange and/or awarded through other activities.

There are eight different types of seeds you can obtain, all of which are shown in detail in the sections that follow.

Disease & Death

Prevention

As your crops go through their growth cycles, there is a chance that disease can infect your crops. Once crops become diseased, they will eventually die if not treated properly, hence you having to replant your crops again. There are several ways to help prevent disease or at least lower the occurrences of it happening, through things like planting specific crops or by simply using compost on your patches.

Planting specific flowers in your flower patches will protect certain plants from disease which are mentioned below. Note of course, only 1 flower can be planted in one flower patch at any one time, and that they must be fully grown to provide protection to your crops.

Type Farming Level Required Protects

Marigolds
2 Onions
Potatoes
Tomatoes

Rosemary
11 Cabbages

Nasturtiums
24 Watermelons

White lily
52 All fruit / vegetables adjacent to it

In addition, by creating a scarecrow and placing in your flower patch, it will also protect any adjacent Sweetcorn planted next to it. The steps needed to make one are listed below.

  • Use an empty sack with a hay bale to make the body
  • Use a bronze spear on the body
  • For the head, use a watermelon on the body
  • Place the scarecrow into the flower patch.

Gardeners are also another way to help prevent disease afflicting your crops, as they can look after your crops for you after giving them a payment of their choice, hence preventing them getting diseased at all. The payment a farmer requests from you will vary according to the crop in question, this can be discovered by right clicking any gardener at a patch and utilising the "Pay option". For example, in order for a gardener to take care of watermelons, they request 10 curry leaves.

Another method is by utilising an Amulet of Farming, which is obtained easily from Farming shops. It has the option of being "bound" to an allotment or flower patch of your choice, and in the event the patch becomes diseased or grown, it will hum, hence you being able to treat its diseased status quickly.

Curing Methods

If your crops unfortunately become diseased don't worry! Disease can be treated through a variety of ways and once treated their growth cycles resume. The easiest way to treat it is by utilising some Plant cure which can be obtained easily from Farming Shops, bought from gardeners at Farming Patches or from the Grand Exchange. Just simply use it on the diseased crop, and the crop will be cured. In regards to bushes and trees which are obviously larger in size, these don't require plant cure, you can simply cut off the diseased foliage from it by simply clicking on the tree/bush.

In addition, if you have level 66 Magic and access to the Lunar Magics you can also utilise the Cure Plant spell, which also cures the targeted crop from disease.

Extra Features

In addition to the traditional methods of rasing the skill mentioned above, there are a few addtional features that you will be able to use to help you level up Farming. There are also various activities and skills that will aid you along your journey to become a master Farmer as well. These are detailed below.

Vinesweeper

Vinesweeper is a safe minigame, very similar to the game Minesweeper, but with an additional Farming-style twist.

Farmer Blinkin has had his farm overrun by endless numbers of rabbits which are munching away at his prized crops. If you would like to help him out, chat with any Tool Leprechaun located at any Farming patch around Gielinor (except the Harmony Island & Troll Stronghold patches) and they will gladly teleport you to the farm.

Of course there are rewards to taking part in the activity. You will be able to purchase a variety of seeds, flags to use in the activity and super compost potions. Alternatively, you can instead choose to use your earned points to gain yourself some Farming XP.

Herblore Habitat

Herblore Habitat is a members only unique jungle area which offers exclusive content for Farming, Hunter and Herblore in this one confined area. Papa Mambo is the owner of the jade vine that surrounds the area - most of the scenery is a part of the vine itself. Many of the items associated with this activity are untradable, and you will interact very little with other players.

You must have at least level 54 Farming to be able to access the area, but it gives you the opportunity to grow vine flowers, vine herbs, vine bushes and the more traditional fruit trees. Using these plants, you will be able to attract creatures for hunting, which in turn will award you items to use in Herblore.

For those who persevere, the habitat offers special skill-based juju potions and the witchdoctor outfit for those who manage to impress Papa Mambo.

The following seeds can only be obtained and used within Herblore Habitat.

Jade Vine

Once you have completed the Back to My Roots quest you can choose to grow your own personal Jade Vine at the patch located in front of Lord Handelmort's mansion in Ardougne, which is easily identified with the 2 large patches in front of its entrance. The farmer tending to the patches Horacio, will provide you with a jade vine seed to plant in the empty patch to the left which requires 53 Farming, giving 50 Farming experience. Once the seed has been planted, it takes about 16 or so hours to grow and goes through its growth cycles like any other plant, meaning that in can die or become diseased. If your Jade Vine dies, a replacement seed can be obtained from Horacio at no charge, and in terms of it becoming diseased, can be treated easiest with Plant cure.

Once the Jade Vine is fully grown, you can check its health for 1500 Farming experience. Afterwards, it starts growing extra branches giving it a "Prune" option, which gives 30 experience per branch cut. However, if you choose to leave it unpruned, it eventually becomes a "Wild Jade Vine", which can then be battled against, and when defeated rewards the player with 2500 Slayer experience. Note that the Jade Vine can only be harmed with a hatchet or Dreadnips from the Dominion Tower, so some food as well as some antipoison may be necessary to defeat it.

Livid Farm

If you've completed the Lunar Diplomacy quest and looking for a complimentary way of gaining Farming experience aside from your daily farming runs, the Livid Farm located on the Lunar Isle is a good way to go. Run by Pauline Polaris, the Livid Farm gives you the opportunity to gain experience not only in Farming, but several other skills as well, such as Magic, Crafting and Construction. The requirements needed to start helping out on the farm are listed below.

  • Completed Lunar Diplomacy as well as being on the Lunar Spellbook
  • 70 Magic
  • 60 Agility
  • 60 Farming
  • 60 Crafting
  • 50 Construction

Rewards are available to those who assist Pauline enough on the farm, with the most notable being new spells unlocked in your Lunar Spellbook, most of which will assist your farming runs in one way or another. For more information on the Livid Farm, check the official Livid Farm guide here.

Harmony Moss

Harmony moss can be grown on Harmony pillars in Prifddinas. To be able to plant these the player must have at least level 75 Farming. The method of growing Harmony moss differs quite a lot from regular farming, this because it does not require a set time to grow, but instead it requires a set amount of experience. Each Harmony pillar is attuned to a certain skill, by gaining experience in this skill the player is able to grow the Harmony moss. It requires a total of 200,000 experience in the relevant skill for the harmony moss to be fully grown, this is without multipliers or bonus experience, as these will not count. Once the moss is fully grown it can be harvested to gain 1-8 Harmony moss. The player will gain 155 experience in the Farming skill per moss harvested. If the Harmony pillars are attuned to a skill that the player has no interest in, they can wait a day, this will change the pillars attunement to a different skill.
