Herblore

Introduction

Herblore is the ancient druidic skill that allows you to mix together potions of great strength to aid you in whatever you're doing, be it requiring that extra extent of skill to craft something, or a boost of fighting prowess to make you that much more dangerous on the battlefield. Whichever option, potions are a vital part of the game, and no adventurer should be without at least one or two in their bank at any time.

To get a head start in the art of Herblore, you can help out the druids in their attempt to cleanse the altar of balance south of Varrock, in the quest Druidic Ritual. Upon completion, you will gain enough exp to instantly boost you to level 3, giving you a kick start in the skill. You will also be offered a tutorial in Herblore by the head druid.

Basics

The key items in herblore (as the name suggests) are herbs. These can be farmed, dropped by monsters (particularly slayer creatures), or obtained as a reward from random events. When you find them, they will be 'grimy', so you must use your herblore skill to clean them for use in a potion.

In order to make potions, you will need 3 items: a vial of water (or coconut milk, for some of the higher levelled potions), a primary ingredient (usually a type of herb) and a secondary ingredient. Use the clean herb with the vial, and then use the secondary ingredient with the unfinished potion.

Vials of water can be obtained from most herbalists shops, and even from some general stores. Some places sell empty vials, which you can simply fill with water for using.

Secondary ingredients can be anything from specific monster drops such as unicorn horns, to plants found either on the ground or through farming, such as white berries.

When all put together, they will create a potion with 3 doses. You can use one potion on another to share the doses (maximum of 4 doses) or use a 4 dose on an empty vial to get 2x 2 dose potions. Note that decanting potions does not require a herblore level, nor give experience.

Herbs

Herbs can be found throughout RuneScape and will often be recieved in a grimy form. To make the herb usable, the player most clean them for use in potions. This can be pretty straightforward, but each herb requires a certain Herblore level to clean. You will recieve experience for cleaning herbs.

If the player does not have the appropriate level to clean the herb, they can take it to Zahur, a herbalist who resides in Nardah. However, using this service costs 200gp and no experience is gained. The Grand Exchange has made this service redundant, due to players being able to sell grimy herbs and buy clean ones. The clean herbs can then be used to make potions.

Potions

The main use of the Herblore skill is to create potions that are useful for boosting skills, for quests, combat, or other purposes. These potions come in many forms (with hundreds of variations for use in quests only), but these are the main types available.

Basic Potions

The simplest form of potion, available from the start, this is the standard form of potion that is most commonly used around RuneScape. To make these, you require only a vial filled with water (or coconut milk where applicable), a clean herb, and a secondary ingredient. Barbarian Mixes

The barbarians have perfected an art of altering their potions for use in combat, by adding roe or caviar (obtained from barbarian fishing) to their potions. As well as the effect of the normal potion from which they're made, these mixes will heal between 30-60 life points per dose. However, you can only add this mix to a 2-dose potion, otherwise the vial would overflow.

Extreme Potions

As the name says, these potions are dangerously powerful. Initially, they could be used in all PvP, overpowering weapons horrendously, however, shortly afterwards, an update prevented their use in 'dangerous' Pvp. They can be used in 'safe' PvP and PvM situations. Extreme potions cannot be made using assistance of another player and they are untradeable.

Perfect Juju Potions

In the Meilyr area of Prifddinas, you can harvest Harmony moss from the Harmony pillars which are required to make perfect juju potions from normal juju potions. The list of normal juju potions are available in the Herblore Habitat guide. To make a perfect potion, you need to add one harmony moss to a 3-dose Juju potion. Each dose lasts for 1 hour but each dose from a Perfect Dungeoneering potion lasts for 4 hours.

Combination Potions

Once you have access to Prifddinas after completing Plague's End, you can purchase the ability to make combination potions from Lady Meilyr by mixing potions into Crystal flasks which can be made in the Ithell area of Prifddinas. Nine combination potions require unreadable pages to be either found in dungeons in Dungeoneering or bought from the Dungeoneering store in the Meilyr area of Prifddinas or in Daemonheim (or a combination of finding some pages and buying some more pages). Some of these potions are really useful in safe PvP and PvM situations and either save space or are better than their non-combination counterparts. Some are tradeable while others are untradeable. While making combination potions, all potions must be at 4 doses; if the combination potion requires another combination potion it must be at 6 doses.

Miscellaneous

Herb Gloves

As a reward from the Fist of Guthix activity, you can buy various herb gloves. While worn, if you get a herb drop from any creature, there is a 50% chance that it will be the herb of the type you have the gloves for. After 100 drops of that sort of herb, the gloves will disintegrate and you will have to purchase more. Each pair of gloves requires a higher herblore level to wear depending on the level of the herb.

Anti-poison Totem

An object you can spend your Dungeoneering tokens on is the Anti-Poison totem. Requiring 70 Herblore to wield, it completely prevents you being poisoned by any creature while wielded in the shield spot (with the exception of the Monstrous cave crawler). This makes it an incredibly useful artefact to have while doing activities where you are poisoned frequently, such as some slayer tasks and Pyramid Plunder.

Scroll of Cleansing

The Scroll of Cleansing requires 49 Dungeoneering and 49 Herblore and can be purchased from the reward trader at Daemonheim for the price of 20,000 Dungeoneering tokens. This scroll gives a 10% chance of saving a secondary ingredient in a potion as well as a 12.5% chance of mixing your potion faster. This scroll is an incredibly useful reward if a player is planning to go from 49-99 Herblore.

Herblore in Daemonheim

Same as on the surface the player will need a herb, a secondary ingredient and a vial of water to make potions in Daemonheim. The herbs can be obtained by growing them using the Farming skill, obtained as a drop from several monsters or obtained from chests. Secondary ingredients are bought either from the smuggler of obtained as a drop from monsters. The herbs also have to be cleaned similair to on the surface.
