Crafting

Introduction

Crafting is available to both members and free players. The skill was released on 8th May 2001. The skill involves you taking raw materials and creating interesting items from them like crafting leather into various garments and armour pieces or turning gold bars and gems into delicate items of jewellery which can be enchanted with the Magic skill. As you advance Crafting levels you will unlock the ability to create much more wild and exciting objects that can be very useful to a player such as dragonhide armour or potion flasks.

Pottery

One of the simplest methods with which to train crafting is through pottery. This is quite simply crafting a shape out of clay, then firing it in a kiln to set it in place for use.

To make clay pottery, follow these steps:

  1. Use a jug or bucket of water with some clay (mined or bought from other players) to get Soft Clay

  2. Use the soft clay on a potters wheel (located in various places around RuneScape, such as the Barbarian Village) and select the item you wish to craft

  3. Use the unfired item on a pottery oven (usually located near the potters wheel) to fire it into the finished item

Spinning

Some fibrous substances can be spun into strings or ropes. In order to do this, you have to use the item with one of the many spinning wheels located around RuneScape (locations close to banks being Lumbridge and Seers' Village). You then simply choose how many of the item you wish to create, and you will start spinning.

Glass Making

Due to a large number of useful items in RuneScape being made from glass, the ability and knowledge of how to craft it is quite useful. In order to make glass, you require three items, which can be obtained via multiple methods.

Item Obtained From

Bucket of sand
Obtained by using an empty bucket with a sand pit (located in places such as Yanille, Zanaris and Entrana). Alternatively, if you have completed Hand in the Sand, then you'll be able to talk to Bert for a number of free buckets of sand per day. A more common option to obtain this item is to purchase it on the Grand Exchange.

Soda ash
Obtained by using seaweed (found along coastlines), swamp weed (found in the Dorgesh-Kaan dungeons) or kelp (found in the Recipe For Disaster underwater area) with a cooking range, and burning it down to ash. Alternatively, you can obtain this item through purchasing it on the Grand Exchange.

Glassblowing pipe
This is the tool used to blow the glass into shape, and can be obtained from the glassblower on Entrana, or in a hut north-west of the Ranging guild. Alternatively, you can obtain this item through purchasing it on the Grand Exchange.

Once you have all three of the items shown above, travel to a furnace, and use either the soda ash or the bucket of sand on it to obtain molten glass, and 20xp. This form of glass is often quite expensive on its own due to uses in both glassblowing and construction, and its relatively slow speed to make.

Use the glassblowing pipe on the molten glass to open up an interface and select the item you wish to make.

For potion flasks, robust glass is needed in substitute for molten glass and for crystal flasks, crystal glass is needed in substitute for molten glass.

Jewellery

Possibly the most popular use for Crafting, using the skill it is possible to craft multiple items of jewellery out of a wide range of precious metals and stones, some of which can be enchanted using the Magic skill to unleash the inner ability of the gemstone to allow for teleporting, increased skill abilities, or multiple other effects.

Moulds

In order to craft any form of jewellery, you first require a mould to shape the base material used for the item. The mould differs for each type of item, and they can be found in multiple locations and crafting shops around RuneScape.

Basic Jewellery

The simplest of jewellery can be made at a furnace with just the mould and the base material of the jewellery (with the exception of the clay ring, which requires you to use the clay with the mould then fire it in a pottery oven).

Note that making amulets or holy/unholy symbols will only make the actual object, and a ball of wool must be used with it to string it so it becomes wearable.

Gems

Gems are rare stones that are usually only found buried within rocks, and can be randomly obtained by mining the rocks. Gems are also often common creature drops, and can also be mined from Gem Rocks, found on the island of Karamja.

When obtained, gems will almost always be in their raw uncut form, and must be cut before being used for jewellery. The first three gem types (members only) are almost only obtainable from the Karamjan gem rocks, and cannot currently be used in any jewellery. These semi-precious gems are also weaker than other gems, and can occasionally be accidentally crushed while cutting, leaving only dust.

Gem-encrusted Jewellery

The main jewellery crafted, these items have got the higher level (Sapphire+) gems embedded into them. In order to make this, you require a gold bar, the cut version of the gem you wish to embed, and the mould of the type of jewellery you wish to create. These items can also be enchanted with Magic to give them item-specific abilities.

Leather

In RuneScape, you can craft various leather armour to aid you in gaining bonuses. In conjunction to the Ranged skill, it can be an essential skill to have.

Making armour from leather requires a needle and pieces of thread. Doubled experience can be achieved with a Proto-tool (needle) for 68k total exp per needle.

Tanning

When you have hides, freshly skinned from monsters throughout RuneScape, they cannot be worked with. They need to be tanned by an experienced tanner, these can be found in towns. Popular ones include Al-Kharid and Canifis.

Weaving

Mostly used for storing products, weaving has limited usefulness, as most the produce can be bought from shops for cheap prices, and they don't provide the most experience; however, it is still often required for quests or tasks.

To weave an item, you need to bring the raw materials to a loom, which can be located in various places around RuneScape, the easiest to reach being the South Falador Farm. Simply select the "Weave" option and choose the item you wish to make.

Battlestaves

Using the crafting skill, it is possible to craft battlestaves, which are superior in strength to the normal staffs you can buy from magic shops.

Crafting a battlestaff requires multiple steps, not all of which are strictly crafting.

First of all, you require an unpowered orb, which can be made by glassblowing. Once you have this, you need to take it to the elemental obelisk of the element you wish to make a battlestaff in.

  • Air Obelisk - Up a ladder in Edgeville Wilderness Dungeon; emerges on a hill in the Wilderness
  • Earth Obelisk - In Edgeville Wilderness Dungeon, south of the ladder to the Air obelisk
  • Water Obelisk - Up a ladder in Taverly Dungeon; emerges on an island off the coast of Catherby
  • Fire Obelisk - The far western side of Taverly Dungeon, surrounded by lava

When you arrive at the obelisk, you need to cast the "Charge Orb" spell of the corresponding element to the obelisk, and all the uncharged orbs in your inventory will become charged with that element. For more information on the Charge Orb spells, please see the Magic guide.

Once you have the charged orb (these can also be obtained from other players if you don't have the levels to make them yourself), you need to use it on a plain Battlestaff. 8 of these can be bought from Zaff's staff shop in Varrock for 7,000gp. Completing successive stages of the Varrock Tasks increases the limit you can buy per day.

If you've completed the Hand in the Sand quest, you can buy pink dye from Betty in Port Sarim for 20gp. You also learn to make black ink in The Golem quest, which can be used to dye other items of clothing.

Snelms

Snelms (snail-helms) can be made from the shells of Morytanian snails, by using a chisel with the desired type of shell, and having level 15 Crafting. Doing so will result in a wearable snelm, and 32.5 crafting experience.

Crafting Guild

Located in Western Asgarnia, just south of Falador, the Crafting guild is a hub for most forms of crafting. In order to enter, you must have at least level 40 Crafting, and must be wearing either a brown apron (buyable from the clothes shop in Varrock) or a Crafting skillcape.

The guild contains a mine with clay, silver and gold in it (which can be used to make jewellery and pottery), pottery wheels and ovens, and sinks to obtain water for softening clay.

Alongside the rocks and utilities, there are also a large number of tool and mould spawns, and even a field outside the guild containing cows that can be killed for their hides, and used to make leather via the tanner inside the guild.

Crystal Harps

Found in a building in the South-West area of the Ithell section in Prifddinas, four crystal harps are found, which, when played, will grant you crafting experience for playing. You will also accumulate Harmonic dust, which may be used to create crystal weaponry, armour and tools with the Smithing skill. Every so often, the harps will start to play out of tune and you must tune them back to perfection. Tuning the harps rewards Construction experience.

Dwarven Army Axe

When creating Soft leather or Soft clay items, the axe will grant an additional 3XP on top of the base experience. The axe must be wielded or in your inventory in order to gain the experience.

Crafting in Daemonheim

In Daemonheim the player can use their Crafting skill to create armour for both Magic and Ranged. Magic armour is made from cloth, which can be made by spinning plant fibres. Ranged armour is made from Bovimastyx hides. The player will need a needle and thread for both these actions.

Skill Mastery

Once you have finally reached level 99 in the skill, you can travel to the Crafting Guild north of Rimmington and purchase the Crafting Skillcape from the Master Crafter for 99,000 coins. This will enable you to use a boost that raises your Crafting level to 100 and also allows you to perform the Crafting Skillcape Emote. The cape itself is members only. However, free players can still perform the emote granted they are wearing the cape.

If Crafting is your first skill to reach level 99, you will be rewarded the Crafting cape. However, if you have other skills at level 99, you will be awarded the Crafting cape (t). If you have the untrimmed version of the cape and achieve level 99 in another skill, the cape will become trimmed automatically.
