Ranged is one of the three key elements to the combat triangle (the other two being Melee and Magic). It allows you to attack opponents from great distances and is capable of dealing heavy damage with abilites, especially Deadshot. It turns out to be a powerful asset when fighting several magical attacks.

There are several methods to train range, going from the simple idea of a bow and arrow to massive cannons. You can even throw explosive Hunter creatures to hit multiple targets! To start training this skill, you just need to equip a weapon with appropriate ammunition, select a combat style from the appropriate menu and start attacking NPCs. The most accomplished of rangers will be able to use the terrain and any obstacles present to gain an advantage over their enemy, as they will not last long in direct physical combat.

Ranged Combat

Ranged has the potential to be really powerful in combat, allowing you to deal a great amount of damage to your oponent from a distance, potentially stunning them briefly or reducing their stats to gain the advantage. Ranged is particularly strong against Magic, but weak to Melee attacks. When fighting NPC's who are weak to Ranged, the player will notice that weaknesses are divided in 3 groups: Arrows, Bolts and Thrown weapons.

Additionally, using the ability Escape could come in handy in combat as it allows you to leap backwards out of Melee distance. Using this in conjunction with stunning or binding abilities, the player can gain a distinct advantage and deal a vast amount of damage to their opponent from a safe distance.

Ranged abilities may only be used while using a type of Ranged weapon. Similar to Magic abilities, using an ability does not use up any ammunition. Much like other abilities, they are split into three types: Basic, Threshold and Ultimate.

  • Basic abilities can be used at any time in combat and generate adrenaline.
  • Threshold abilites can only be used when 50% of the adrenaline bar has been built up and costs a small amount of adrenaline to use.
  • Ultimate abilities can only be used when the adrenaline bar reaches 100% and costs 100% adrenaline to use.

There are 2 types of armour the player can use: Power and Tank armour. Power armour usually has a lower defence rating and lifepoints boost, but it grants the player a boost in their damage output. Tank armour has a higher defence rating and lifepoints boost, but does not add any damage. The statistics listed below are for the full sets of armour. The lifepoint and defence ratings listed below apply when all pieces of equipment are equipped, with some sets having extra pieces (such as a shield) which also contribute to the listed lifepoint and defence ratings.

Ranging Guild

The Ranging Guild, located just to the south-west of Seers' Village and north of Ardougne, is home to a ranging competition minigame that grants Ranged XP. To be able to enter the guild, you must have at least level 40 Ranged.

Once inside, you can take part in the competition. Speak to the competition judge and pay 200 coins. You earn tickets during the competition which can be redeemed for items from the ticket merchant located within the northern part of the complex. To train within the guild, join the archers in the middle tower. Due to the distance of the rival towers, you will require a longbow.

Grapple Shortcuts

There are several agility shortcuts that are used together with the Ranged skill, enabling you to scale walls, swing over bodies of water on trees, and climb up mountain sides. A crossbow of any type and a complete Mithril grapple is required.

Balthazar Beauregard's Big Top Bonanza

Balthazar Beauregard's Big Top Bonanza, also known as the Circus, is a weekly Distraction & Diversion activity. It is a circus-based game where you have to perform a set of three different activities which reward you in circus outfits and experience. Circus barkers are found in each town mentioning the whereabouts of the Big Top.

There are no minimum requirements for this D&D, although it is recommended to have high levels in Agility, Magic and Ranged. It is also beneficial to have as many emotes unlocked as possible.

Skill Mastery

Once you have finally reached level 99 in Ranged, you can then travel to the Ranging Guild in Hemenster and purchase the Ranged Skillcape from the Armour salesman for 99,000 coins. This will enable you to use a boost that raises your Ranged level to 100 and also allows you to perform the Ranged Skillcape Emote. The cape itself is members only, however free players can still perform the emote granted they are wearing the cape.

If Ranged is your first skill to reach level 99, you will be rewarded the Ranged Cape. However, if you have other skills at level 99, you will be awarded the Ranged cape (t). If you have the untrimmed version of the cape and achieve level 99 in another skill, the cape will become trimmed automatically. The only way to keep a copy of the untrimmed cape is to use a keepsake box from Solomon's General Store.
