Defence

Introduction

Defence defines how well you can defend against enemy attack. In essence, it refers to the chance you have of being hit. Having a high Defence level makes you a tough warrior and gives you the ability to last longer in combat. When under attack by an opponent, your Defence level, in conjunction with various other factors, helps determine the chance of dodging the damage dealt to you by them. The higher the level, the fewer successful blows an opponent will land against you, regardless of combat style.

Defence is the skill that allows you to utilize improved, higher tiered armour. Better armour combined with a high Defence level will minimise the chances you have of being hit in combat. To train the skill, you should select the 'Defence' option from your combat interface. Also note Magic & Ranged allow you to train Defence in conjunction with them.

Combat

Defence is used in all aspects of the combat. If you are wearing Magic armour then you will be vulnerable to Ranged attacks. If you are wearing Ranged armour you will be vulnerable to Melee attacks and if you are wearing Melee armour then you will be vulnerable to Magic attacks. Alternatively there is another class of armour, hybrid, this offers protection against all combat disciplines but it does give less protection compared to armour of the same tier.

Defence Abilities

Defence abilities are abilities that are focused around protecting you from enemy attacks, healing and damaging enemies. Like the other abilities they are split into three categories; basic, threshold and ultimate.

  • Basic ability: requires no adrenaline and uses up no adrenaline
  • Threshold ability: requires 50% adrenaline and uses up some adrenaline
  • Ultimate ability: requires 100% adrenaline and uses up all of your adrenaline

Devotion
1 Protection prayers are 100% effective (75% in PvP) for 5 seconds. Killing an opponent extends the effect by 5 seconds up to a maximum of 20 seconds. Threshold ability. Unlocked as a reward for World Event 2. Can be obtained as a rare drop from General Graardor or Kree'arra.

Anticipation
3 Concentrate on anticipating your foe's attacks, reducing all damage taken by 10% and providing immunity from stuns for 10 seconds. Basic ability

Bash
8 Bash your target with your shield, stunning them for 3 seconds. Targets immune to stun instead suffer 188% weapon damage. Basic ability

Revenge
15 Enact revenge upon your foes, causing any attacks you receive to increase your damage dealt by 10%, stacking up to 100%. Lasts 20 seconds. Threshold ability

Provoke
24 Taunt your target, forcing them to focus their attacks on you. Player targets have their damage reduced by 50% when attacking anyone other than yourself. However, you also do 50% less damage when attacking any other player. Lasts 6 seconds. Basic ability

Immortality
29 Any damage you receive is reduced by 25% for 30 seconds. If you should die during this period, you will miraculously return to life. However, the Immortality effect will be consumed. Ultimate ability

Freedom
34 Break free of any stuns or snares and gain immunity to any further ones for 6 seconds, also clears damage over time effects. Basic ability

Reflect
37 Raise your shield, reflecting 50% of any damage you receive back at the attacker. Lasts 10 seconds. Threshold ability

Resonance
48 The next attack you receive within 6 seconds will heal you instead of harm you. Basic ability

Rejuvenate
52 Channel your adrenaline to help restore 40% of your life points and fully restore your drained stats over 10 seconds. Ultimate ability

Debilitate
55 Debilitate your target for up to 100% weapon damage, also reducing any damage they deal to you by 50% for 10 seconds. Threshold ability

Prerparation
67 Prepare for the fight ahead, causing each attack you receive to reduce the remaining cooldown of Resonance by 3 seconds. Lasts 10 seconds. Basic ability

Barricade
81 Summon an impenetrable barricade, which prevents all damage received for 10 seconds. Ultimate ability

Natural Instinct
85 Instantly leech your target's adrenaline. If fighting an opponent without adrenaline, for the next 20 seconds you will gain 200% adrenaline from your own abilities. Ultimate ability. Requires the completion of the quest The World Wakes

Armour

There are 2 types of armour the player can use: Power and Tank armour. Power armour usually has a lower defence rating and lifepoints boost, but it grants the player a boost in their damage output. Tank armour has a higher defence rating and lifepoints boost, but does not add any damage. The statistics listed below are for the full sets of armour.

Weapons

As Defence is a skill the is for protection there is only one type of weapon that goes in the off-hand slot, Defenders. These can be obtained by killing Cyclopses in the Warriors' Guild. When you start killing these there is a rare chance that they will drop a defender.

Extra Features

Activities

There are several activities which allow the player to take a break from their regular defence training, but which still will allow them to gain defence experience. Some of these require the player to fight either players or monsters with a certain goal, while others are more tactical and require no combat.

Pest Control

In this activity the player has to help the Void Knights with defeating the evil pests who are attempting to invade Gielinor. They can do this by keeping the Void Knight safe while he removes the shields from the portals through which the pests spawn, once the shields are down the players can attack these portals and destroy them. The players win once all portals are destroyed, they however lose if the Void Knight dies. This is a safe activity, if the player dies they will respawn with all their items in the activity and be able to get back in action immediately. Defence experience, amongst other rewards can be purchased with Void Knight Commendations which will be received upon winning a game. For more info about Pest Control see the Pest Control guide.

Conquest

This activity can be found on the same island as Pest Control, however this activity requires no combat whatsoever. To become a Void Knight, a person needs to not only be strong and good at combat, they also need to be able of strategic approaches. In this activity the player can test their strategic abilities against other players in a small game which looks similair to chess. The player will get several troops which they can command around on a board, these troops are all different, as in some are lighter troops who can move further but are weaker, some are stronger troops who are not able to move around a lot but they have high lifepoints and are able to deal a lot more damage. Regardless of who wins this game, both players will receive an equal amount of Void Knight Commendations, which they once again can spend on defence experience as well as other rewards. Soul Wars

In Soul Wars the player's main goal is to defeat the opposing team's avatar, this avatar initially requires a slayer level of 100 to be damaged, however the player can collect soul fragments and offer those to the soul obelisk to lower this requirement. It's not as easy as it sounds though, since the other team will attempt to do the same, and they will actively be able to kill players to avoid this from happening. This is a safe minigame, if the player dies they will respawn with all their items in the minigame, after a short period they are able to get back into the game. If the player's team wins they will receive 3 zeal points, they will receive 2 for a draw, and 1 for a loss. These zeal can be exchanged for defence experience or other rewards. Warrior's Guild

In the Warrior's Guild the player can find several small combat related minigames, these minigames are safe as there is no way to die in them. One of them is defence based, in this minigame the player will have to correctly block projectiles fired at them from a catapult. If they correctly block the attack they will receive tokens as well as defence experience. These tokens can be used to gain access to the cyclops room on the top floor. Court Cases

In the Court Case Distraction and Diversion the player will have to either defend or prosecute a suspect of a crime. To do this they will first need to receive a court summons, once they have a court summons they can go to the court house in Seers Village to start the court case. If they decide to defend the suspect, they will receive defence experience upon successfully winning the case. For more information view the Court Cases Guide.

Dominion Tower

In Dominion Tower the player is able to fight quest bosses from quests they have previously completed, there are several different modes they can pick to do so, all with different rules or handicaps applied. For each boss they defeat they will receive a small amount of Dominion Factor, this can be exchanged at the tower for rewards as well as an XP book, with this XP book they can gain experience in defence as well as other combat skill. The amount of experience the player receives depends on their level as well as how much Dominion Factor they exchanged. Further rewards can be obtained by completing certain achievement. Boosts

There are several items and prayers which can temporary boost the players defence level or defence rating, effectively allowing the player to block more hits and take less damage.

Potions

Saradomin Brew
Boosts the player's Defence level by 1-4 levels, lowers their Attack, Strength, Ranged and Magic levels by 1-4 levels, restores lifepoints by 500.

Super Saradomin Brew
Boosts the player's Defence level by 1-6 levels, lowers their Attack, Strength, Ranged and Magic levels by 1-4 levels, restores lifepoints by 800.

Defence Potion
Boosts the player's Defence level by 1-8 levels.

Super Defence Potion
Boosts the player's Defence level by 2-13 levels.

Extreme Defence Potion
Boosts the player's Defence level by 3-17 levels.

Overload
Boosts the player's Attack, Strength, Magic, Ranged and Defence skills by 3+15% of their levels. This boost is repeated every 15 seconds over the duration of 5 minutes.

Can be used on another player, who has their aid on, to boost their Defence level.

Testudo Scrolls
Boosts the player's Defence level by 9 levels.

Titans Constitution Scrolls
Boosts the player's Defence level by 1-12 levels, heals the player by 200 lifepoints.

Prayers/Curses

There are several prayers which will boost the player's Defence while they are active, some of these will drain the opponents Defence at the same time. The Ancient curses require completion of the Temple at Senntisten quest.

95 Increases Strength by 23% plus 10% of the opponent's Strength levels, up to 9 levels. Increases Attack and Defence by 15% plus 15% of the opponent's Attack and Defence levels, up to 14 levels. Ancient Curse

Torment
95 Increases the player's Magic attack, Magic strength and Defence by 15% plus 15% of the opponent's Magic levels, up to 14 levels. Ancient Curse

Anguish
95 Increases the player's Ranged attack, Ranged strength and Defence by 15% plus 15% of the opponent's Ranged levels, up to 14 levels. Ancient Curse

Defence in Daemonheim

In Daemonheim the player will be able to wear better types of armour if they level their Defence skill, most of these new tiers can be worn at every 10th level.

Skill Mastery

Once you have finally reached level 99 in Defence, you can then purchase the Defence Skillcape from Harlan, who is located in the building North of the Lumbridge general store, for 99,000 coins. This will enable you to use a boost that raises your Defence level to 100 and also allows you to perform the Defence Skillcape Emote. The cape itself is members only, however free players can still perform the emote granted they are wearing the cape.

If Defence is your first skill to reach level 99, you will be rewarded the Defence Cape. However, if you have other skills at level 99, you will be awarded the Defence cape (t). If you have the untrimmed version of the cape and achieve level 99 in another skill, the cape will become trimmed automatically. The only way to keep a copy of the untrimmed cape is to use a keepsake box from Solomon's General Store.
