Woodcutting

Introduction

Woodcutting is one of the five resource gathering skills. Training Woodcutting involves chopping down various types of vegetation, mostly various trees. In doing so, you will receive a part of the vegetaion (in most cases) which can usually be used in some other skill or activity. The chance of successfully cutting a tree is gradually improved as your Woodcutting level increases, and also by using a more effective tool.

Vegetation you can cut is scattered all throughout Gielinor, but the more rare types can be found marked by a on the minimap. Due to its relation with various other skills, Woodcutting is one of the fastest and simplest ways in which players can make a living.

Basics

Trees are found everywhere throughout Gielinor. They can be tracked down to localised "woodcutting spots" where they cluster in large numbers. Each log is unique to its corresponding tree, so if you want to woodcut a certain log then you will have to find its corresponding tree. Note that, depending on what kind of tree you are chopping, it will disappear after you receive a random amount of logs from it.

In order to woodcut, you will need any type of hatchet; the better the hatchet, the faster the rate that you woodcut. Simply left-click on a tree and if you have the required level to chop that tree then just sit back and watch the logs accumulate in your inventory!

Tools

As you cannot cut down entire trees with your bare hands, various tools are required. You will need a hatchet in most cases, but for Jungle wood, a machete will be required.

Hatchets

In order to chop a tree, you must either be wielding a hatchet, have one in your inventory or have one in your toolbelt. There is a large array of hatchets usable for chopping trees; the better the hatchet you use, the faster you will find that you chop logs.

This item functions as a Dragon hatchet when used; however, there is a 33% chance that you will incinerate a log when chopped, providing both Woodcutting and Firemaking experience simultaneously. It requires 92 Firemaking to obtain and use.

*** Obtained by taking a Dragon hatchet and 3000 Harmonic dust to Lady Ithell in Prifddinas.

Machetes

For cutting the thick vines of the jungles of Karamja, you need a sharper, faster item than an axe. The instrument of choice is a machete, which is the only thing that you can use to chop through any type of jungle wood. There are several types of machete, starting with the plain one and finishing with the gem-edged ones. Please note that only members have access to machetes.

Woodcutting in Daemonheim

While raiding the dungeons of Daemonheim, you are also able to woodcut various trees which grow along the walls to help aid you. The trees found within Daemonheim are slightly different than those you would find on the surface of Gielinor. Logs cut within Daemonheim will stack in your inventory. The various trees you can gather from here are found in the table below. For further information related to Dungeoneering, please visit it's Skill Guide.

Extra Features

In addition to the more traditional methods of raising the skill as mentioned above, there are a few additional features that you will be able to earn and unlock as you level up. There are also items and other skills that will even aid you as you attempt to level up! These are detailed below.

Lumberjack Outfit

The Lumberjack Outfit is set of clothing obtained from the Temple Trekking activity. It offers bonus XP per log cut when worn. For more information on the Lumberjack Outfit and Experience Boosting Sets, please click here.

Temporary boosts

These items will temporarily boost the players Woodcutting level visibly. This will allow them to cut higher levelled trees and possible cut trees faster.

Item Woodcutting Boost Notes

Axeman's Folly
1 Lowers Attack and Strength for a small period of time

Mature Axeman's Folly
2 Lowers Attack and Strength for a small period of time

Spicy Stew
Ranges from -6 to +6 Created by mixing Brown spice into a Stew. The boost given is completely random.

Useful Items

These items help the player by providing small bonuses etc.

Item Effects

Strung rabbit foot
Raises the chance of the player obtaining bird's nests or crystal geodes.

Seer's headband
The headbands gives the player a chance of obtaining 2 logs at once. The higher versions of the headbands allow this for higher tier trees.

Tree-shaking scrimshaw
Raises the chance of obtaining a bird's nest or crystal geode by 300% for the regular version and 400% for the superior scrimshaw.

Log-splitting scrimshaw
The player has a chance of getting bonus woodcutting xp instead of obtaining a log. This chance is 15% for the regular scrimshaw and 20% for the superior scrimshaw.

Dwarven Army Axe
When collecting Normal or Oak logs, the axe will grant an additional 3XP on top of the base experience. The axe must be wielded or in your inventory in order to gain the experience.

Woodcutting Urns

While you are woodcutting and have one of these Woodcutting urns in your inventory, it will collect woodchips. Once filled, it can be teleported away for free experience. Higher level trees will fill the urns faster than lower level ones, but the experience awarded when teleporting the urn away will be the same regardless of what type of tree you were cutting. Choking Ivy, however, will not fill urns.

An urn will need to first be activated by using an Earth rune on it, which requires the same Crafting level as was required to make the urn originally.

Urn Crafting Level Woodcutting XP gained

Summoning Familiars

Using the Summoning skill, you will find some perks to aid you in Woodcutting. The table below lists all familiars that will aid you as well as the effects they have.

Familiar Summoning Level Bonuses

Beaver
33 Forages logs & planks
Boosts Woodcutting +2
Multichop scroll ability cuts up to three logs from a nearby tree

Giant Ent
78 Forages oak logs
Acorn Missile scroll ability deals damage on up to 3 opponents and provides a chance of an acorn drop

Hydra
80 Regrowth scroll ability regrows a farming tree stump instantly into a tree

Bird's Nest

Occasionally while woodcutting a bird's nest will have fallen out of the tree you were chopping. If you pick it up and search it you may receive items like rings, bird eggs and farming seeds. The rings can be enchanted into useful items or sold on the grand exchange, the bird eggs may be incubated and raised as your very own summoning pets, and the farming seeds can be used to raise your farming level. Also, collecting the actual nests that these come in can be useful because crushed nests are actually an ingredient in the herblore skill, simply use a pestle and mortar on the nests you collect to turn them into crushed nests. They can then be sold on the Grand Exchange.

Crystal Geodes

Crystal geodes fall randomly when chopping a Crystal tree, much like a normal tree with Bird's nests. When the geode is "shattered" you get a valuable item, mostly gems. You also have a chance of getting a Crystal triskelion fragment. As well as that, you can get a Crystal seed if you have completed the quest Roving Elves. See the table below for the different items you can get from the geode's.

Canoe Network

Canoes are yet another transportation method in RuneScape, allowing you to travel up and down the River Lum. There are currently four different types of canoes that you are able to construct; the better the canoe, the further you can travel up or downstream from your current location.

Champion's Guild
Barbarian Village
Edgeville

For further information on the Canoe Network, please visit it's official guide by clicking HERE.

Sawmill Training

At level 80 Woodcutting the player unlocks Sawmill training. Here the player takes on jobs of cutting planks in different shapes and lengths. They gain xp for cutting these planks and an amount of bonus xp when completing the job. For more information see the Sawmill training guide.

Arctic Pines

After completing the quest The Fremennik Isles the player is able to use Arctic pine logs to create a shield or gain additional woodcutting xp.

Item Level Required Notes

Fremennik Round Shield
54 To create this item the player will need 2 Arctic pine logs, a nail and a rope. Despite requiring a Woodcutting level, creating this item gives Crafting xp.

Split Log
54 This item is created by splitting Arctic pine logs on any of the stumps on Neitiznot. The player gains 42.5 Woodcutting xp per split log. The split logs can be deposited on any of the log piles.

Evil Tree

Every so often, an Evil Tree will appear which taints the area with their presence. In the beginning, the Evil Tree is like any other so leprechauns are eager to help it mature. But once it is fully grown, it begins to endanger the nearby area. The only way to preserve the nearby area is for players to come to the Evil Tree and attempt to chop it down.

For full details on the Evil Tree, please visit the Evil Tree D&D Guide.

Skill Mastery

Once you have finally reached level 99 in the skill, you can travel to the woods north of Falador and purchase the Woodcutting Skillcape from Wilfred, who is wandering the area, for 99,000 coins. This will enable you to use a boost that raises your Woodcutting level to 100 and also allows you to perform the Woodcutting Skillcape Emote. The cape itself is members only. However, free players can still perform the emote granted they are wearing the cape.

If Woodcutting is your first skill to reach level 99, you will be rewarded the Woodcutting cape. However, if you have other skills at level 99, you will be awarded the Woodcutting cape (t). If you have the untrimmed version of the cape and achieve level 99 in another skill, the cape will become trimmed automatically.
