Herblore Habitat

Introduction

Herblore Habitat is a unique jungle area which offers exclusive content for Farming, Hunter and Herblore. Papa Mambo is the owner of the jade vine that surrounds the area - most of the scenery is a part of the vine itself. Many of the items associated with this activity are untradable, and you will interact very little with other players.

For those who persevere, the habitat offers special skill-based potions, a new way to train Hunter on the area-specific jadinko creatures, and the witchdoctor outfit for those who manage to impress Papa Mambo.

Exploring the Habitat

Access

Sadly, the habitat has been set up in the remote reaches of Karamja, far from the familiar human cities. However, there are a few ways to get there, ordered from best to worst:

  • Witchdoctor mask: Offers unlimited teleports to Papa Mambo. This must be earned by hunting the god jadinkos.
  • Juju teleport spiritbag: Bought from either Papa Mambo, Bettamax in Taverley, or the Grand Exchange - they will teleport you to the same place as the mask. However, they have a starting price of 2,000 coins and do not stack.
  • Walk from Shilo Village: The village is the closest location to the habitat, and can easily be accessed through the teleport on Karamja gloves 3 or by using the cart service from Brimhaven. Follow the river east of the village, and climb over the vine into the habitat.
  • Walk from Karamja gnome glider: Head south of the glider site, traverse the stepping stones over the river, and climb over the vine into the habitat.

Although the World Map may suggest that the rest of the Khazari Jungle and Herblore Habitat are connected, there is no way to travel directly between the two.

Features

  • Green line: Impassable vine, this marks the boundaries of the habitat.
  • Red line: Climbable vine, you will often need to use these to cross between areas.
  1. Papa Mambo. Using a teleport will take you here. He runs a shop stocked with useful supplies; you can also pay him coins to build an environment feature, or striped vines to ward off jadinkos. There is a cauldron next to him which acts as a water source.
  1. Northern hunting area. Common, amphibious and draconic jadinkos can be caught with marasamaw plants, if you can attract them.
  1. Fruit tree patch. You can use this patch to train Farming as if it were any other.
  2. Vine flower patch. This is the patch on which you should apply a dose of juju hunter potion, if the jadinko you are attracting requires it. A man named Astlayrix stands near this patch; he will offer to teach you the principles of attracting jadinkos, and will also keep track of what attracts any jadinkos you have already encountered.
  1. Environmental feature. A box of tools lies next to the patch, so you do not need your own.
  1. Vine bush patch.
  2. Vine herb patch.
  3. Southern hunting area. Use tracking to catch shadow, diseased and camouflaged jadinkos, or marasamaw plants to catch igneous, cannibal, aquatic and carrion jadinkos.
  1. Bank deposit box.
  1. Balance vine. Used to access the eastern island (requires 55 Agility).
  1. Eastern island and second vine herb patch. God jadinkos will spawn here, if you can determine what attracts each kind.

Skill Tables

Farming

Vine flowers, vine herbs, vine bushes and fruit trees can be grown. The fruit trees are not exclusive to Herblore Habitat, and their seeds can be bought beforehand. Plants may be part of one or more requirements to attract a certain kind of jadinko, where an italicised jadinko name indicates that a juju hunter potion must be applied to the vine flower - this attraction will cease if the plant becomes diseased or dies. Only apple, banana and orange trees are used to attract jadinkos.

N.B. All farming seeds and their produce are untradable, with the exception of fruit trees.

There is a zombie farmer who will protect the fruit tree, vine bush and vine herb patches. There is also a zombie leprechaun, with the added function of being able to store some types of juju potion (juju hunter, scentless, juju farming, and the god potions).

Vine flowers: Their seeds can be bought from Papa Mambo; he will also give you a starter pack of them if this is your first visit. A vine flower will always be necessary to attract a jadinko, making 54 the effective minimum Farming level. Hunting jadinkos will occasionally award you with flower seeds.

Construction

Construction is not a major part of Herblore Habitat - there is no way to earn Construction experience here, nor are there any Construction-related rewards, so you may be surprised to see this table.

However, you will be required to build environmental features in the middle of the farming area to attract certain jadinkos. Doing this yields no experience, and no tools of your own are needed. If your Construction level is too low, you can pay Papa Mambo to build the feature for you - he charges a fee equal to the level requirement multiplied by 1,000. Fortunately, assistance from a friend can be used to satisfy the requirement instead.

Hunter

I guess this place ought to be called Hunter Habitat; you will certainly be hunting a lot of jadinkos. They are caught with either marasamaw plants, which behave exactly like box traps, or via tracking. Tracking is performed with a noose wand like you will be used to, however there is one extra detail to be mentioned: the jadinko may run into a hole, after which you must search another hole to see if it emerges.

Each jadinko will always drop an untradable but stackable vine (with the exception of cannibal, which isn't strictly a vine) which has its own special property. There is also a chance (roughly 1 in 15) to find a farming seed too.

N.B. Witchdoctor clothing functions as camouflage at the habitat. It is worth acquiring as soon as you are able to.

To attract jadinkos to the habitat, you may need to plant a combination of a vine flower, a vine bush, a fruit tree, and construct an environmental feature (the vine flower is always mandatory however). For some jadinkos, you will need to apply a dose of juju hunter potion to the vine flower. Jadinkos will linger around the area for 20 minutes after their attracting plants are removed unless they are "overwritten" (e.g. you cannot track two types of jadinko at once), however there are some exceptions (god jadinkos will vanish as soon as any attracting plant is diseased or removed, and jadinkos which require the juju hunter potion will always vanish when it wears off).

The god jadinkos (Saradomin, Guthix and Zamorak) are not on this table. The requirements to attract them change every week (0am GMT on Wednesday), including all four of the fruit tree, vine flower, vine bush and environmental feature, and they vary for each individual, so they must be found by trial and error. There are a few patterns though: each jadinko will require a distinct coloured flower, and said flower must always have a dose of juju hunter potion applied to it. Additionally, the fruit tree for the week will often be the same for all three jadinkos.

N.B. The game may give you a clue when you have two or three of the requirements for a certain god jadinko - it is helpful if you note down what you have growing at the time of this message.

Herblore

After collecting vines, there is a unique set of potions that you can concoct. They must be made in juju vials - you can buy water-filled juju vials from Papa Mambo. Note that these vials will hold a maximum of four doses, similar to regular vials, but the Zombie Leprechaun will only store potions containing three doses.

Unike their ingredients, these potions are tradable.

Getting Started

Minimum Levels

  • 54 Farming
  • 70 Hunter

Recommended Levels

These are the levels at which you will be able to access all of the content in Herblore Habitat. 80 Construction is not mandatory, but it saves having to find assistance or having to pay Papa Mambo each time you build a new environmental feature.

  • 80 Farming
  • 81 Hunter
  • 75 Herblore
  • 80 Construction
  • 55 Agility

These are the levels required to earn the entire witchdoctor set.

  • 77 Farming
  • 81 Hunter
  • 54 Herblore
  • 55 Agility

Recommended Items

  • 20,000 coins. This is plenty of money for using Papa Mambo's shop. If you do not have 80 Construction, be prepared to spend in the order of 1M coins.
  • 10 apple, banana and orange tree seeds. They can be bought for a low price from other players.
  • 10 vine blossom seeds of each colour. Buy these from Papa Mambo or ask for the starter pack.
  • A noose wand. You can buy this from Papa Mambo.
  • 4 or 5 marasamaw plants, if you are under or over 80 Hunter respectively. Buy these from Papa Mambo.
  • Magic secateurs equipped, for extra yield from vine herb patches.
  • Farming tools, you should have these stored with the Tool Leprechaun. If you are using lunar spells, you may also bring casts for Cure Plant and Fertile Soil.

If you have visited Herblore Habitat before, then you should also bring:

  • Witchdoctor clothing, if you have it.
  • Vine bush seeds.
  • Vine herb seeds, should you wish to plant any.
  • Juju farming potions if you have them, for extra yield from vine herb patches, either on your person or stored with the Zombie Leprechaun.
  • Juju hunter potions, either on your person or stored with the Zombie Leprechaun.
  • Scentless potions are also helpful for catching jadinkos with marasamaw plants.

Your First Visit

N.B. You may wish to undertake Astlayrix's tutorial first. This will show you the principles of attracting jadinkos, and unlock both the common and igneous jadinko.

Plant a red blossom seed in the vine flower patch, and plant a banana seed in the fruit tree patch (you will need to turn it into a potted sapling first; Mambo sells plantpots). The growing red vine flower will attract common jadinkos - head north out of the farming area to catch them.

Common jadinkos have a 100% drop of withered vines, which you can use as bait for catching more of them, although what you are actually seeking are vine bush seeds and vine herb seeds. Of particular interest is the erzille herb seed, which you should plant as soon as you receive it (supercompost is advised to ensure its survival). This herb is the primary ingredient of the juju hunter potion - they are important for later on, so you should endeavour to acquire several of them.

It may take a while, but once you are happy with the number of vine bush seeds you have earned (three or more of each is ideal), you have a choice. Construct a Boneyard in the farming area to attract diseased jadinkos (this is why the banana tree is there), they can be tracked in the southern area for their corrupt vines. The vines are the secondary ingredient for juju hunter potions - after tracking a few of them, you will be ready to make the potions as soon as the erzille is grown.

Your other choice is to construct an Abandoned house, which will attract shadow jadinkos in the same area to track. Their shadow vine drops are the secondary ingredient for scentless potions. If you wish to hunt these, be sure to plant an argway herb seed (the primary ingredient) on the eastern island while the erzille grows. Unlike juju hunter potions, scentless potions are not mandatory to make, but they are helpful nonetheless.

Once you have obtained a handful of vine bush seeds and juju hunter potions, you will be able to attract and hunt all types of jadinko! (provided you have the Hunter level)

Earning Witchdoctor Clothing

If you manage to catch all ten of the regular jadinkos within one week (this counter resets at 0am GMT on Wednesdays), Papa Mambo will offer you a reward. First, he will offer you some experience in either Farming, Hunter or Herblore (equal to twice the amount you would earn from turning in a pair of strange rocks). Second, he will give you either a witchdoctor body or robe, this is awarded randomly and it is possible to receive a piece more than once.

Additionally, if you manage to catch all of the god jadinkos after having caught the regular jadinkos in that same week, you will receive another experience reward (equal to half the amount of the first reward) and a small experience bonus for actions around the habitat if you are wearing witchdoctor clothing, lasting for 30 minutes. You will also be given a witchdoctor mask, which is worth obtaining for its unlimited teleport to Herblore Habitat.

Catching Regular Jadinkos

Catching the jadinkos in this order aims to use as few seeds as possible. It also assumes that every patch begins with nothing growing in it, so feel free to start at a different point depending on what you have planted. If you decide to skip a certain jadinko because you have already caught it, be sure to consult the Hunter tables to see what you need for the next one.

N.B. As mentioned earlier, the juju hunter potion effect will remain on the vine flower patch even if it is uprooted and replaced with another colour.

  1. Common (north): Plant a green vine flower. Common can be caught with any colour of vine flower.
  2. Carrion (south): Plant a kalferberry bush and construct a Boneyard.
  3. Diseased (tracked): Plant a banana tree. The kalferberry bush is not required for Diseased, and the vine flower can be any colour.
  4. Cannibal (south): Construct some Tall grass and use a juju hunter potion on the vine flower. The banana tree is not required for Cannibal.
  5. Shadow (tracked): Plant a red vine flower and construct an Abandoned house. The kalferberry bush and the banana tree are not required for Shadow.
  6. Aquatic (south): Plant an apple tree and construct a Pond. Re-apply the juju hunter potion if the previous dose has worn off. Everything you have planted is required for Aquatic.
  7. Camouflaged (tracked): Plant a lergberry bush and construct some Standing stones. Re-apply the juju hunter potion if necessary. The vine flower can be any colour, and the apple tree is not required.
  8. Draconic (north): Construct a Dark pit. Re-apply the juju hunter potion if necessary. The apple tree is not required.
  9. Amphibious (north): Plant a blue vine flower and construct a Pond. The apple tree is not required.
  10. Igneous (south): Plant an orange tree and construct a Thermal vent. Everything you have planted is necessary, however the juju hunter potion effect is not.

Catching God Jadinkos

Attracting god jadinkos works very differently to attracting regular ones. Their requirements will change every week, and they will be different for each individual, so you cannot ask anyone else what they have planted. Instead, you must work out what to use by trial and error. God jadinkos will always require the juju hunter potion to be in effect (and they will vanish when it wears off). If the potion is in effect, and you change something in the central farming area, you may receive a message similar to this:

It is helpful to write down the number of correct requirements you have, coupled with the environmental feature and plants you are using. Here are a few observed guidelines that should make attracting the god jadinkos a little easier:

  • The juju hunter potion effect does not count as a "requirement". This is because it is always necessary. God jadinkos are considered to have four requirements in total (vine flower colour, type of vine bush, choice of fruit tree, and environmental feature).
  • Try constructing all of the possible environmental features before you replace plants. If you have 80 Construction as recommended, this is completely free and will not expend seeds. In contrast, if you change the vine bush often, you may run out of vine bush seeds which are more difficult to find.
  • The colour of vine flower is different for each god. So if you have determined that green attracts Saradomin, then Guthix will be attracted by either a red or blue flower.
  • The type of fruit tree is usually the same among all three god jadinkos.

Eventually, you will encounter the friendly, coloured message saying that you have attracted a god jadinko.

Head over the balance vine to the eastern island, where there are plenty of jadinkos for you to catch. Their vine drops are used for the samaden-based potions which grant 10% extra experience for skills in the habitat.

After catching all of the god jadinkos, you may claim the witchdoctor mask and bonus experience from Papa Mambo. Well done!

Benefits

You may ask, "What benefit is there to using Herblore Habitat aside from acquiring the witchdoctor clothing?"

Higher Healing Food

The juju fishing potion grants access to the baron shark, and the juju cooking potion grants access to juju gumbo - these require the same Fishing and Cooking levels as their regular counterparts (shark and tuna & sweetcorn potato). They are the highest healing conventional foods in RuneScape, healing 200 and 220 LP respectively, with a bonus of 100 LP healed over roughly 12 seconds, for a total of 300 and 320 LP.

To make juju gumbo, use a dose of juju cooking potion on a baked potato to produce a strange potato. Then, with a knife in your inventory, use the strange potato with "tuna and corn" (in a bowl) - you will slice up the potato and create the final product.

Increased Herb Harvests

The juju farming potion grants roughly a third more herbs from herb farming patches. Coupled with magic secateurs, this is useful to make more money from selling the herbs, or as a handy convenience for those who grow their own herbs for Herblore training.

An Extra Fruit Tree Patch

Within Herblore Habitat, the fruit tree patch can be used as if it were any other, meaning that you can squeeze a little more Farming experience out of your day. In addition, you can drink a dose of Saradomin's Blessing (but for this tree only) to gain 10% more experience when receiving the Check-health bonus for the tree.

Training Mining

Far underground, the popular Living Rock Caverns are now slightly easier to train at. Using the juju mining potion will often summon a stone spirit which deposits ores, meaning that you need to run to the deposit box less often. Three of these potions (12 doses) will last for an hour, but make sure not to carry too many.

Training Hunter

Finally, at Herblore Habitat itself, the native jadinkos boast impressive Hunter experience to compete with other Hunter content of their level. One tactic to try would be to grow the plants that attract draconic jadinkos; this will also attract common jadinkos to the same area. You can catch both types whilst using the withered vine drops from common jadinkos as trap bait.

If you can, use scentless potions in conjunction with Zamorak's Favour for more experience. It is possible to gain upwards of 100,000 XP per hour here!
