RuneSpan

Introduction

The RuneSpan is a Runecrafting training method released on the 30th April 2012, requiring players to siphon runic energy from creatures that explore the area or random spawning nodes. Doing so will award you with Runecrafting experience that is designed to be the best in the game, overtaking the ZMI (Zamorak Mage Institute) Altar.

The RuneSpan is a safe activity. There is nothing to kill you in the RuneSpan, unless you are poisoned. Gravestones will appear as normal incase of death, but runes made in the RuneSpan will automatically be converted into points for you when you leave which can be used to purchase rewards from Wizard Finix's shop outside the RuneSpan portal.

Location

The RuneSpan can be found on the top floor of the Wizard's Tower by the Runecrafting Guild portal after talking to Wizard Finix. After speaking with Wizard Finix you can enter the RuneSpan. To get into the RuneSpan use either the green portal, lower level, or the red portal, higher level.

You can get to the Wizard's Tower by:

Gameplay

Players do not need any items to take into the RuneSpan either worn or inventory but most choose weight reducing gear. Players also do not need to take any teleports, runes or their own essence with them.

Step

Players should start by collecting 25 essence from the floating essence nearby your spawning location. If a player ever runs out of essence, they can always get 25 more by grabbing more from the floating essence. Siphoning a creature completely will reward a player with 50 rune essence.
Once you have some rune essence, you can start siphoning creatures or nodes to gain runes. Each rune collected is worth a fixed number of points that can be later spent at the rewards store. Experience is rewarded to players for successfully siphoning a creature, but players will also be rewarded between 0 and 2 experience for attempting to siphon a creature. Creatures within RuneSpan can also be chipped at, rewarding the player with rune essence instead of runes. This is not recommended unless the player is very low on rune essence, and there are no spawn points nearby.
As well as creatures, there are Nodes located all over the RuneSpan. Nodes can be siphoned for runes, and provide much better experience than simply siphoning from a creature of the same rune type. Unlike creatures in RuneSpan, completely siphoning a node will not reward the player with any rune essence.
You may notice some platforms that will help you travel from island to island, each requiring different types of runes. These are displayed on the platforms themselves or displayed in the examination text.
As well as normal training, players have the option to participate in two different Distraction and Diversions specific to the RuneSpan (The Runesphere and the Stranded Yellow robed wizard, both which will lead to a experience reward.) You can speak to any wizard within RuneSpan and ask them the location of the Yellow Wizard. Upon finding the Yellow Wizard, players should speak to them. They will ask for a specific type of rune, and will reward you with some very generous Runecrafting experience if you give them the correct rune. If one does not have the correct runes required, giving the Yellow Wizard your best rune will give you the next best experience.
To leave the RuneSpan, players can either speak to one of the wizards and ask to be taken back to the Wizard's Tower, teleport out by using the Wicked Hood, or leave by any other teleport method. Upon leaving, all runes will be converted into points and added to your total.

RuneSpan Levels

There are 3 different levels to the RuneSpan, each catering to different Runecrafting levels. Free-to-play players only have access to the first level and part of the second level. Runes gathered here are taken by the Runecrafting Guild, but members are able to claim points towards wicked robes, new magical staves, and a new massive pouch (requires level 90 Runecrafting) which holds 18 essence. All players are rewarded with Runecrafting experience while training within RuneSpan.

Lower Level

The lower level of the Runespan can be accessed at any Runecrafting level by using the portal on the first floor of the Wizard's Tower. It is completely available to all players. All types of esslings will be found on this level.

Creatures

Living on the planes of RuneSpan are various creatures who can be siphoned for runes or chipped for essence. There are three different species of creatures, each with their own rune types. Every successful siphon of a creature will use up one rune essence, and will create one rune of the creatures type. There is the possibility that you will fail to siphon a creature, and you will not consume any essence, receive no runes, and between 0 and 2 experience.

Any number of players may siphon from a creature, although once one of the players siphoning the creature creates 10 runes without a pause, the creature will be destroyed. All players siphoning the creature when it is destroyed will be rewarded with 50 rune essence. The creature will respawn at the same spot a few seconds after being destroyed.

As well as being siphoned, creatures may also be chipped at. This requires 10 lower level runes, and gives between 10 and 20 rune essence. Players may not chip the same creature twice in a row, and may not chip the same creature until three others have been chipped. If a creature is destroyed however, players may chip it again after it has respawned.

Nodes

Nodes are elemental objects within the plane of RuneSpan that can be siphoned for runes. As with creatures, siphoning nodes gives Runecrafting experience, but do not give rune essence upon destruction. Players may also fail to siphon a node, receiving no runes and between 0 and 2 experience.

Unlike creatures, nodes only come in two different categories. Basic nodes that produce a single rune type, and complex nodes that offer two different rune types. When siphoning a node that offer two rune types, players will be more likely to receive the lower rune type of the two. Siphoning nodes gives twice the normal experience for siphoning the creature of the same rune type, and players will be siphoning nodes almost 90% of the time while at RuneSpan.

Nodes have a timer and will expire after a certain amount of time. Nodes will expire faster when fewer players and siphoning runic energy from them, so it's best if all players can focus on the same node to prolong it's lifespan. The higher floor you are on while in RuneSpan, the better nodes you will find.

Platforms

Platforms are located on the different islands within RuneSpan. Platforms act as bridges between the islands, transporting players from one to another. To use a platform, players must use up some runes. These runes are shown on the base of the platform in the forms of symbols, and are listed within the examine information of the platform.

Some platforms require 'any elemental rune', these being air, earth, water and fire runes. When using a platform that requires any elemental rune, it will use up the rune type that you have the most of.

Experience Rates

Runespan is playable at any Runecrafting level. At higher levels, the experience gained per hour is the best in the game, beating even the ZMI (Zamorak Mage Institute). The amount of experience gained is 50,000 experience points per hour at level 60, and at 99 Runecrafting, siphoning only Soul Esswraiths, players are capable of getting 70,000 experience points per hour.

Some of the best experience rates involve finding a platform that has the best creature you can siphon from, and siphoning from any nodes that appear on the same platform as you. When a Yellow Wizard appears, giving him the rune he is asking for will reward the player with a few thousand Runecrafting experience, so it is recommended to complete the Yellow Wizard when ever you see him.
